NEW YORK
Sonoma Valley Publishing, the commercial printing arm of the twice-weekly Sonoma (Calif.) Index-Tribune, will close at the end of the month, owing to technology changes. The change will move printing of the twice-weekly newspaper to the Rohnert Park pressroom of The Press Democrat, headquartered in Santa Rosa.

The Press Democrat quotes co-owner Bill Lynch saying that "innovations in press technology have made our printing equipment obsolete." He added that the company would concentrate on its newspaper, quarterly Sonoma magazine and other print products.

The company retained employment counselors and a staffing agency to help find jobs for the 14 employees who will be laid off, Lynch said. It also looked to large area employers for possible openings the Press Democrat reported.

Among Sonoma Valley Publishing's 200-plus customers are several weekly and college newspapers. The Press Democrat is not expected to take on work from Sonoma Valley's customers.
