Is Halloween Harmless Fun?

Halloween and the Forces of Darkness

by Pastor David J. Meyer, former astrologer and occultist
source

Where did it all come from? October 31st is a day of ghosts, witches, goblins, and grotesque creatures. It is also a day of orange and black, of candles and jack-o-lanterns. Costume parties and strange customs occupy the minds of western civilization, and all of this seems to be intensifying every year. Children wearing every kind of costume imaginable, and some unimaginable, have been going for door to door for years at the end of October saying "trick or treat" and collecting bags full of treats. In recent years, many people have been decorating their yards as cemeteries and making their houses look spooky. Even churches have Halloween parties and set up "haunted houses" as fund raising projects. Where did it all come from, and what does it all mean? Most people would say it is all harmless fun. Some would venture to say, "If there is any witchcraft in it, it is white witchcraft." In order to truly answer both of the questions where did it come from and what does it mean, we must go clear back to the origin of it all.

Halloween has its origin in the British Isles about 1300 years ago. In those days, there were many men and women who practiced a so-called "nature religion" known as Wicca. (The word "Wicca" means "wise ones." The word "witch" is derived from "Wicca.") The witches worked their spells and magic as individuals or sometimes in groups of 13 known as Covens. Sometimes the witches and wizards worked as a triumvirate or power of three. The female Wiccan was known as a witch, and the male Wiccan was known as a wizard. The word "warlock" was not used by witches to identify themselves. It is actually a Scotch-Gaelic word that means "traitor." Satanists use the word "warlock."

The Wiccans were worshippers of the "Earth Mother", the sun, the moon, and stars. Witches do not believe in Satan. The Wiccans or witches meet every Friday night at a gathering called an "esbat." They draw a magic circle with a six-pointed star in it called a "hexagram", from which we get the word "hex." The coven of 13 stand "sky clad" or naked in the hexagram and work spells by chanting and doing rituals such as "drawing down the moon." The full moon is sacred to witches, especially if it is on a Friday. It is considered to be even greater if the Friday is the 13th day of the month.
Eight times each year, the witches celebrated a sabat and the ritual work and spell casting was always done on the eve of the sabat. The sabats are Imbolc on February 2nd, the spring equinox on March 22nd, Beltaine on May 1st, the summer solstice on June 22nd, Lugnahsaid on July 31st, the fall equinox on September 22nd, Samhain on October 31st, and the winter solstice on December 22nd, which is also known as Yule.

Witches have special ways of celebrating for each sabat, and even though they do not believe in Satan, it is Satan who gives them the experiences they have and deceives them into thinking it is the forces of nature they are tapping into. Halloween is the most important of the eight sabats in witchcraft and is known to the witches by the Scotch-Gaelic word "Samhain", which is pronounced "SOW-EEN." It is believed that on that night, the barrier between this world and the next, known as the astral plane, becomes very thin. The witches believe that this allows spirits of departed ones to travel freely back and forth between the earth and the spirit realm. Thus, Halloween is the highest day in Wiccan witchcraft. On that night for many centuries, witches would work their magic and then have wild parties all through the darkness of that night. They would play games, such as bobbing for apples, because witches regard the apple as sacred. The witches would also tell stories from their personal diaries of spells known as their "book of shadows." These ghost stories would start when the hosting High Priest or Priestess would say, "A witches' tale and a cup of ale for the host of our guests unseen."

In those early days in England, there was another kind of witchcraft known as Druidism. The Druids were called "men of the oaks" and were a strange clan of men who dressed in white robes. The Druids worshipped Cernnunos, the "horned hunter of the night." Halloween was sacred to the Druids because their sun-god receded to the underworld on October 31st, which is why darkness increased and light decreased according to their reckoning.

As darkness set in on October 31st, the clan of Druids would put on their white robes and hoods. They would carry sickles and Celtic crosses as they began a torchlight procession. At the beginning of the procession, a male slave was killed and dragged by a rope fastened to his left ankle. The Druids would walk until they came to a house or a village where they shouted the equivalent of "trick or treat." The treat was a slave girl or any female to be given to the Druids. If the people refused to a girl as a "treat", blood was taken from the dead slave and used to draw a hexagram or six-pointed star on the door or wall of the village. Spirits of the "horned hunter of the night" were invoked by the Druids to kill someone in that house or village by fear that night.

If the house or village gave a girl as a "treat", the Druids put a pumpkin with a face carved in it in front of the door or gate of that place. Inside the pumpkin was a candle made of human tallow to keep evil spirits away. Thus, the Jack-O-Lantern was and is a sign that you have cooperated with Satan.

The treats or female victims were taken to Stonehenge where they were raped and killed and then sacrificed on the sacred bonefire until only glowing embers were left. The "bonefire" is the origin of the modern day bonfire. As a matter of luck for winter survival, all villagers were expected to use the glowing embers of the bonefire to light their hearths.

As we can clearly see, Halloween is not harmless. Satan has people in our modern era mimicking the witches and Druids of old. All of this is cursed of God. We live in a time when witchcraft is being revived. Movies are filled with witchcraft and numerous television programs such as "Charmed" are teaching witchcraft to millions. The Harry Potter books are likewise furthering the cause of Satan! Halloween is no joke and is not harmless fun! This evil holiday has no part in the life of a Christian. The Roman Catholic Church borrowed Halloween from the witches, which shows how blind they are. May God help you as you read this tract to avoid Halloween and warn others that it is strictly the invention of Satan and can never be anything but evil of the first magnitude!

Arsenic in Sonoma Water

Oct 29, 2008 10:41 am US/Pacific
Sonoma Among CA Counties Cited On Arsenic In Water
source

WASHINGTON (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― Five public water systems in Sonoma County are among 11 in the state cited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for high arsenic levels. The EPA is ordering the 11 to reduce levels of arsenic in drinking water.

Tuesday's EPA order also affects local drinking water systems located in Fresno, Kern, Kings and Nevada counties.

The 11 water systems were ordered to reduce the arsenic levels by treating the water or replacing or rehabilitating their water wells to meet federal arsenic level standards by 2010. Systems that fail to comply face penalties of up to $32,500 per day for each violation.

The standard as of Jan. 23, 2006 is 10 parts per billion, the equivalent of a few drops of ink in Olympic-size swimming pool. The level set in the 1970s was 55 parts per billion, the EPA said.

A water system is considered out of compliance if arsenic readings are above 10 parts per billion for four consecutive quarters. The EPA said levels above 15 or 20 parts per billion are of concern, particularly to children, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring mineral found throughout the United States. It is a known carcinogen, and ingesting high levels over many years can increase the chance of lung, bladder and skin cancers as well as heart disease, diabetes and neurological damage, according to the EPA. It inhibits the body's ability to fight off cancer and other diseases.

The Sonoma County public water systems identified as being out of compliance are Groskopf Warehouse and Logistics in Sonoma; Rancho de Sonoma Mobile Home Park in Sonoma; Lancelot Mobile Home Park in Santa Rosa; the public water system operated by Niels Chew at 21600 Eighth St. in Sonoma and J. Vineyards & Winery in Healdsburg.

The five water systems serve between 30 and 200 people, and the levels of arsenic in their water ranged between 18 and 50 parts per billion, the EPA said.

The 11 water systems are required to submit a written compliance plan that describes how they will return their drinking water systems to compliance and the management controls that will be put in place.

Everett Pringle, coordinator of the EPA's Region 9 Drinking Water Enforcement Office, said the water systems singled out are expected to be fully compliant by 2010. He said they will be eligible for financial assistance to make any necessary infrastructure improvements.

The EPA said it will also assess whether the public water systems need more time to comply with the arsenic standards as 2010 nears.

The arsenic standard applies to 54,000 community water systems in the United States. A community water system is one that serves at least 15 locations or 25 residents year-round, including most cities, towns, apartments and mobile home parks with their own water supplies.

The EPA estimates 5 percent, or 3,000 community water systems serving 11 million people, will have to take corrective action to lower the current levels of arsenic in their drinking water.

EPA officials said the 11 water systems are the first in the state to be cited for non-compliance and that 20 or 30 more will receive enforcement notices.

Power Outage in Sonoma

Around 6:30 tonight, the power went out and according to PG&E, 2,800 customers are affected. When I called them at 7pm, they said a crew was on the scene and they estimated return of power by 11pm. They didn't know the reason for the outage. The local radio 91.3 has some details and because we are on a generator, I have power. So that's it for now. May there be light soon!

10/30/08 UPDATE
According to a co-worker, the outage last night continued until 3am! Apparently, a transformer on Hwy 12 in Boyes Hot Springs blew.

MANY THANKS to our PG&E folks who were up all night making repairs!

NEW YORK
Sonoma Valley Publishing, the commercial printing arm of the twice-weekly Sonoma (Calif.) Index-Tribune, will close at the end of the month, owing to technology changes. The change will move printing of the twice-weekly newspaper to the Rohnert Park pressroom of The Press Democrat, headquartered in Santa Rosa.

The Press Democrat quotes co-owner Bill Lynch saying that "innovations in press technology have made our printing equipment obsolete." He added that the company would concentrate on its newspaper, quarterly Sonoma magazine and other print products.

The company retained employment counselors and a staffing agency to help find jobs for the 14 employees who will be laid off, Lynch said. It also looked to large area employers for possible openings the Press Democrat reported.

Among Sonoma Valley Publishing's 200-plus customers are several weekly and college newspapers. The Press Democrat is not expected to take on work from Sonoma Valley's customers.

Mobile pet grooming business on the road to success

Sonoma Valley Sun
October 16, 2008

Marcella’s Mobile Pet Grooming hit the pavement five years ago and the fur has been flying ever since. In the spotless white GMC box van that her airline mechanic husband tricked out for the thriving business, Marcella Note provides nearly every service available at brick-and-mortar salons. And it all happens in her clients’ driveways.

“The mobile pet grooming experience is shorter and therefore less stressful for pets, especially those that are more fearful and elderly, because they know they are home and their owner is close by,” said Note. “There is also the convenience of not having to drop off and pick up your pet.”

Note enjoyed her work as a financial consultant specializing in financial planning, but she had always wanted to own her own business. When she learned that the sister of one of her husband’s friends had a mobile pet grooming business in Southern California, Note decided to switch careers and follow her dream and soon became certified as a pet groomer.

The mother of two attended Madeline’s Institute of Pet Grooming in Santa Clara, where she learned pet care, grooming skills and animal first-aid and how to operate a small business. After Note’s supportive husband, Ladislav, altered the vehicle by adding two 50-gallon water tanks and everything else needed to groom both dogs and cats, Marcella’s new business venture was ready to roll.

Marcella’s Mobile Pet Grooming charges prices competitive with other local groomers. Fees vary, based on the type of dog and where the client lives. The cost of grooming a small dog in Sonoma is $60. That includes a trim, bath, ear cleaning, nail clipping and anal gland cleaning. There is an added fee of $20 to $30 if Note has to travel out of the Valley to provide services.
“I have about 20 clients who schedule regular trims or baths every six weeks, others I see three or four times a year, and I can usually accommodate the rest of my clients within a week to 10 days,” said Note. “The average groom takes one-and-a half to two hours and I’m busiest during the holidays and after there’s been rain.”

Note was raised in Bucks County, Penn., and her family moved to Sonoma in 1997. Daughter Emilie, 13, and son Josef, 8, both attend Woodland Star Charter School. Emilie has taken a keen interest in her mother’s work and sometimes helps out when Note needs an extra hand.

“Even though the work can be physically demanding, I like working with the animals, the flexibility of my schedule, and being my own boss,” said Note. “I love animals and hate to see them dirty and uncared for. When I visit friends or family and see a dirty dog with long nails, I have to fix it.”

More Eyes on the Streets Now - Taking GIS to the Next Level in Santa Rosa

Street-by-street, gathering digital data

Santa Rosa is photographing every yard, building and lamppost along all city roads, from A Street to Zurlow Court.

JOHN BURGESS / The Press Democrat

The city of Santa Rosa is creating its own database, using an SUV with a 360-degree-view camera to photograph everything on every street of the city.It is creating a vast database that it plans to use for everything from enforcing planning codes to cataloging the city's street trees.

It has hired a contractor to drive down streets and take millions of highly detailed photos to create a digital, panoramic world -- similar to Google's controversial Street View images but with higher resolution.

The street-level photos, which can be viewed by city employees on an internal computer network, are the latest addition to the city's growing arsenal of digital tools used to manage daily operations.

While it sounds like Big Brother incarnate, the city's growing use of technology is designed to save employee time, cut paper waste and curb emissions by reducing driving.

City officials believe efficiencies gained through technology will help maintain services in a time of severe budget cuts.

Funded with a $197,000 matching grant from the state, the photos are part of the city's larger effort to digitally catalog everything it manages and owns.

"We want one place to get all the information about the city," said Eric McHenry, the city's chief technology officer. "We are looking to make the city more efficient. And this lets city workers drive a lot less, and use less gas."

At the heart of the move to digitize the city is a program known as graphic information systems, or GIS.

The city's GIS coordinator, Michael Hargreaves, pulls together vast amounts of information, such as the location of trees, manhole covers and light poles, and affixes that data to a point on a digital map.

Using the city's GIS database and software, Hargreaves can quickly find the light pole nearest to Mendocino Avenue and Benton Street, identify its model type and see when it was last serviced -- all without leaving his cubicle.

Funding for the photo project was provided through a state grant to help cities measure how much greenhouse gases are being removed by local trees.

With the new street-level technology, Hargreaves can quickly pull up a photo of a tree along a city street and let the software determine its height and diameter. These measurements allow the city to calculate how much greenhouse gases are absorbed by the canopies of trees along Santa Rosa streets.

The software used to create the panoramic effect and determine the height of objects such as houses, bridges and trees is a marvel of modern computing.

To calculate the height and width of objects, it relies on the same basic principles used by the human brain. It compares a photo taken from the left with another taken from the right -- just like human eyes.

Put another way, the software makes quick work of a complex geometry equation and triangulates distances, such as the height of a tree or length of a building.

The photos and accompanying software are provided by a small Bay Area firm.

"This is all part of an effort to make the city more efficient, and in the long run reduce costs," McHenry said.

Already in use

About a dozen cities in the Bay Area have incorporated the panoramic technology.

"It is a very, very handy tool," said Morad Fakhrai, deputy director of public works for Hayward, which began using it in 2005.

Fakhrai used the technology Tuesday to look at a stretch of road after a resident complained the bike-lane sign was confusing. Within minutes he had loaded images taken from the street, zoomed in on the sign and surveyed the bike lane. Fakhrai agreed with the resident. The sign was confusing, and he was able to assess how to solve the problem before driving out to the site.

"City workers can basically drive up and down the street on their computers," he said. "It doesn't eliminate the need to go out there. But it does reduce the number of times people need to go out there."

Hayward police officers have laptops installed in their vehicles with software to view the street-level photos. They use the program to help make decisions in the field, such as before storming a house or setting up a perimeter, Officer Lori Ferreyra said.

"We can get a good idea of how to set things up before moving in," Ferreyra said. "Officers love it. It works wonderfully."

Hayward photographs its streets every other year. It creates a time-lapse effect that lets staff view the changing cityscape, including identifying building projects that did not obtain required permits.

Santa Rosa already uses aerial photography intertwined with its GIS software to catch and enforce projects that were not properly permitted, McHenry said.

"That has been very useful for us," he added.

How it works

Santa Rosa officials hired the same company Hayward uses.

Kujin Lee, founder of Cupertino-based @City, said the photo technology is always improving, and Santa Rosa is getting the latest iteration.

A turret atop Lee's SUV contains 18 lenses that snap simultaneous photos. The images are later stitched together by software to create the 360-degree panorama. He recently upgraded six of the cameras to high resolution, which allows city workers to peer deeper into yards, or better analyze cracks in the asphalt.

Lee had photographed about 75 percent of Santa Rosa's streets as of mid-October. City officials expected to get the final results in four to six weeks -- all 650 miles' worth of it.

Every photo Lee takes is stamped with its exact location using a high-end global positioning system. Photos are taken about every 30 feet.

Big GIS plans

The new panoramic photos are part of an ambitious plan unveiled last month by Santa Rosa for its GIS program.

It plans to record the latitude and longitude coordinates of every non-moving asset it manages -- from the location of a manhole cover in Rincon Valley to a park bench in Howarth Park.

"We made the decision that any asset the city has will be geocoded and entered into the GIS system," McHenry said.

Also, every time maintenance is conducted on a piece of city property, or a claim for repair is submitted, a digital record is sent to the GIS database and becomes part of the object's history.

Thus far, the city has entered hundreds of thousands of data points, such as the location of stop lights, fire hydrants, property lines and sewer systems. It has even begun creating 3-D renderings of downtown in its GIS database.

"We have more eyes on the streets now," McHenry said. "We're taking GIS to the next level."
